The Olympic surfing semifinals had an added wow factor on Monday: a special appearance from a whale.
While Tatiana Weston-Webb from Brazil and Brisa Hennessy of Costa Rica were competing in a semifinal match, a whale breached in a picture-perfect moment for spectators.
The Olympic surf competition was held at Teahupo’o, on the island of Tahiti in French Polynesia. Weston-Webb won the semi and went on to take silver to Caroline Marks of the U.S. in the final.
Humpback whales can be seen near many of the French Polynesian islands during their migration between July and November.
