Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos’ home runs have become synonymous with major news events for baseball fans.
And his on-field performance on Sunday, hours after President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 race, reaffirmed their theories.
Castellanos hit a solo home run into left field to help lead his Phillies to a 6-0 win against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The home run adds to Castellanos’ history of going deep or coming up clutch on the same day as noteworthy events.
In 2020, Castellanos famously hit “a drive into deep left field” — and later sparked memes — while Cincinnati Reds’ broadcaster Thom Brennaman was apologizing for using a homophobic slur on the air.
Castellanos also hit a homer on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, hit a game-winning double after the announcement of Willie Mays’ death and homered prior to the assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump.
The Phillies outfielder has briefly acknowledged the memes, writing “and there’s a deep drive…” on an Instagram post last year.
Jess Castellanos, Nick Castellanos’ wife, once acknowledged the memes surrounding her husband with a “PSA.”
“Something shitty happens everyday in the world find a new joke,” she wrote on X in 2021.
The baseball world weighed in on Castellanos’ latest home run on Sunday.
“All jokes aside, this has to be studied…,” wrote @JoshReynolds24 on X.
“Nick Castellanos going deep every single time there is a tragedy or something newsworthy is legitimately unlike anything I’ve ever seen in sports history. There can’t be any type of logical explanation. No words.”
